As Kyoto dresses itself in photography, the exhibition "Drifted Presence" by Kentauros Yasunaga will be held as part of the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival KG+ 2026 program. The venue is Gallery kojin kyoto, located directly in front of the Kamo River. The exhibition's spatial composition is unique to this location, with the "time" carried by the river's flow resonating with the exhibition's theme of "water." The main visual features the water basin of a shrine in the dead of night, enveloped in silence. The shimmering water emerging from the pitch-black darkness allows fragments of prayers and memories accumulated in this land since ancient times to "drift" into the present day. Furthermore, for this exhibition, Japanese paper by Mr. Ichibei Iwano and custom-made wajue Japanese paper are used as the support for the artworks. Particular attention has been paid to the "materials" enveloping the works, using persimmon tannin-dyed Kashiki Paper encountered through Kakishibu Tomiyama, and Japanese paper crafted by Mr. Wataru Hatano for framing. The deep texture of persimmon tannin and the feel of handmade Japanese paper gently receive the light within the photographs, further enhancing the tranquil worldview. Please come and experience the scenes that have drifted across time and space, accompanied by the murmuring of the Kamo River.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Ten years have passed since I moved to Higashikawa-cho, Hokkaido. There is something that has remained unchanged since I arrived here, guided by water. The quality of water's three changing states in nature, and the fluidity born of time. When these intertwine, a presence emerges that does not rely solely on sight. I find beauty in the momentary expressions woven by this world. To fix light onto Japanese paper that holds atmospheric water. It is an attempt like a prayer, to tether the intangible memories of water to this place. Now, quiet memories of water sealed within Japanese paper. Scenes drifted, received by paper in the place where water is carried.
