Kawaijuku has renewed its high school teaching material 'Thinking and Expression Work' this April. A new supplement, 'My Future Design: Statement of Purpose Prep BOOK,' has been added, focusing on the 'statement of purpose' which is essential for early admissions, particularly for comprehensive selection methods. In response to the increasing number of students opting for early admissions, this aims to support guidance at schools.

Increasing Guidance for 'Statement of Purpose' Creation. The Challenge is Dealing with Students Who 'Don't Know What to Write'

Early admissions* are becoming an established part of university entrance exams in the Reiwa era. At private universities, 60% of enrolling students use this method, and the number of applicants continues to grow. On the other hand, providing application guidance to these students is becoming a challenge for high schools. Particularly in creating the 'statement of purpose,' which is required by all universities, many students find themselves stuck when they try to write it in the summer of their third year. Their lack of self-analysis and insufficient research on 'why they want to attend that university/faculty' becomes apparent, leading to a surge in cases where students are stranded before they can even start writing. Dealing with these 'students who can't write' is a major concern for teachers.

*Early admissions: A common term for comprehensive and school-recommendation-based selections. They are called this because results for private universities are often announced by December of the student's third year.

The newly created 'My Future Design: Statement of Purpose Prep BOOK,' added as a supplement to the popular 'Thinking and Expression Work' series, responds to these concerns from the front lines. Primarily designed for use in the first and second years of high school, it guides students through self-analysis in three steps: 'my current self,' 'my current interests,' and 'my future vision,' while also expanding their thoughts to why they want to attend a specific university or faculty. By carefully building up their thoughts about themselves from an early stage in their first and second years, the goal is to have them ready to write their statement of purpose in 'their own words' by their third year.

[About 'Thinking and Expression Work']

This is the introductory product in the 'Thinking and Expression Series,' which develops and measures the 'thinking and expression skills' considered important for entrance exams. It formulates these skills into five abilities: 'knowledge application,' 'reading comprehension,' 'ideation,' 'composition,' and 'expression techniques.' Students choose one of three themes—'Culture and I,' 'Society and I,' or 'Science and I'—and proceed with the work. It is a popular series supported by teachers as a material that develops the fundamental abilities to 'read' and 'think' about phenomena, which are the foundation of 'writing' skills.
