The 7 JR Companies Collaborate to Standardize Materials and Parts for Railway Electrical Equipment: Toward Sustainable Railway Operations and Supply Chain Resilience

Hokkaido Railway Company, East Japan Railway Company, Central Japan Railway Company, West Japan Railway Company, Shikoku Railway Company, Kyushu Railway Company, and Japan Freight Railway Company (hereinafter referred to as the "7 JR Companies") will standardize materials and parts for conventional line railway electrical equipment and strengthen supply chains in collaboration with manufacturers, with the goal of maintaining and developing railway businesses into the future and providing stable transportation services to customers.

1. Background

Since the privatization of the Japanese National Railways in 1987, each of the 7 JR Companies has independently developed, managed specifications for, and maintained its own railway electrical equipment. This approach has yielded significant results in maintaining and developing railways by building equipment tailored to regional characteristics and specific line requirements. However, as railway-specific electrical equipment materials and parts are produced in limited quantities compared to general-purpose products, the environment surrounding the railway business, including supply chains, has changed in recent years due to factors such as shortages in electronic components and labor shortages in the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, there are cases where materials and parts with identical functions have slightly different specifications across the various JR companies. Given these circumstances, there is a need to examine systems that allow railway operators and manufacturers to conduct sustainable railway operations.

2. Initiatives of the 7 JR Companies

The 7 JR Companies will standardize the specifications of materials and parts for conventional line railway electrical equipment used by each company to streamline manufacturers' design, production, and inventory management. Since November 2024, the 7 JR Companies have established study groups in various fields and have already formulated common specifications for several types of equipment (such as polymer insulators for overhead lines and impedance bonds). Moving forward, we will expand the scope of target equipment and engage in full-scale standardization of materials and parts for railway electrical equipment.

3. Expected Benefits

・Stabilization of supply for materials and parts, and increased efficiency in manufacturers' design, production, and inventory management.

・Ability to share resources among the 7 JR Companies in the event of disasters or other emergencies.

4. Future Direction

Through these initiatives, we aim for the entire industry, including the 7 JR Companies and manufacturers, to develop sustainably. Furthermore, to address challenges facing the entire Japanese railway industry, we will actively engage in discussions and collaboration with railway operators other than the 7 JR Companies and with various manufacturers.
