[Lecturer]
Mr. Tomoki Togawa, Executive Officer, General Manager of Aquaculture Development Department, Overseas Business Division, Nichimo Co., Ltd.
[Lecture Overview]
Nichimo Co., Ltd. has a history of approximately 45 years, starting with coho salmon farming in Miyagi Prefecture. However, rising seawater temperatures in recent years have made farming periods and production volumes unstable. This issue is not limited to coho salmon; yellowtail and red sea bream farming, particularly in western Japan, are also facing unstable production environments due to recent environmental changes. Consequently, we focused on land-based aquaculture starting in 2020. In cooperation with Kyushu Electric Power and others, we established the land-based aquaculture company Fish Farm Mirai LLC, and began selling 'Mirai Salmon' in 2023. We are currently achieving stable production and receiving high praise from customers. This lecture will detail the significance of land-based aquaculture, its challenges, and the keys to success, focusing on our past experiences with failure.
