Akane Osawa, a talent and personality, hosts the Nippon Broadcasting radio program 'Akane Osawa LUCKY 7 supported by Inuzuka Seisakusho' (airing on Nippon Broadcasting every Monday to Friday from 9:50 PM to 9:57 PM). As the opening guest for the 'Akane Osawa LUCKY 7 in Korea' segment from June 29 (Mon) to July 3 (Fri), Kangnam appeared and shared his lifelong dream of entering the entertainment industry and the journey that led to his breakthrough in South Korea's variety scene.
Kangnam and Akane Osawa
Kangnam, a charismatic figure who has reshaped South Korea's variety entertainment landscape with his exceptional communication skills, is also beloved as a national 'ideal husband' for supporting his wife, a former Olympic gold medalist.
Since childhood, he dreamed only of becoming a celebrity: 'I never considered any career other than being an entertainer. I wanted to stand out, become famous, and be popular with women...' Raised near Tokyo Disneyland, he was so eager for attention that he once danced on stage alongside Mickey Mouse. In Japan, he debuted in a band with a former drummer of ORANGE RANGE, but after failing to gain traction, he transferred to a South Korean entertainment agency. Jokingly, he said he was scouted because he was 'incredibly handsome,' but recalled it was actually due to his fluency in both Japanese and Korean. However, he also revealed that he faced setbacks in Korea, accumulating approximately 2 billion yen in debt.
Despite being blocked by his agency president from appearing on variety shows due to language barriers, Kangnam insisted, 'I will definitely become popular!' and negotiated directly. His persistence paid off—his mere 10-minute appearance on a show sparked massive public response, launching him into over a decade of continuous success at the forefront of the industry.
Regarding differences in humor between Japan and South Korea, Kangnam noted, 'Korean comedy is straightforward and easy to understand.' He also said the Korean production style—taking an average of five hours to film a one-hour program—suited him well. After his breakthrough, he juggled 12 commercials and 14 regular TV appearances, recalling, 'For about a year, I literally didn’t sleep at all,' describing the peak of his busy schedule.
In the final Q&A segment of the program, when asked about the most difficult job he’s ever done, Kangnam replied, 'The North Pole Marathon last year.' He thought it would be a regular marathon, but it turned out to be a grueling 42-kilometer course including mountain trails and icy terrain. 'After finishing, I was unconscious for about two days,' he recalled, leaving Osawa visibly astonished, saying, 'That must have been incredibly tough.'
Kangnam’s guest appearance on 'Akane Osawa LUCKY 7 supported by Inuzuka Seisakusho' aired from June 29 (Mon) to July 3 (Fri) at 9:50 PM. Episodes are also available as podcasts after broadcast.
