In recent years, JFE Techno-Research has seen a rapid increase in consultations regarding technical support for the realization of a circular economy. In particular, there has been a growing demand for total solutions from a single company and a single point of contact for issues spanning multiple technical areas such as recycled material evaluation, dismantling and sorting process evaluation, and environmental impact assessment. To meet these market demands, it was judged urgent to build a dedicated system that unifies the diverse technical knowledge accumulated.

[Background and Challenges]
In recent years, with the worsening resource constraints, companies are strongly required to efficiently utilize resources, design products with recyclability in mind, and reduce environmental impact to achieve a decarbonized society. Especially in the automotive industry, due to advances such as electrification (EVs and hybrids) and electronification, there is a need to handle various materials in addition to steel, such as lithium-ion batteries, magnets for motors (including rare earths), light metals like aluminum, and resins.

On the other hand, the realization of a circular economy faces the following technical challenges:
● Evaluation of recycled material properties
 Comprehensive property evaluation for applying recycled materials to automotive parts where quality and safety are required.
● Dismantling and sorting process design
 Process design to achieve rapid identification and high-precision sorting of various materials.
● Quantification of environmental impact
 Evaluation of environmental impact throughout the entire series of processes.

[Features of the Service]
JFE Techno-Research will consolidate and utilize its long-cultivated material evaluation technology, analysis know-how, and process verification experimental knowledge within the newly established Circular Economy Technology Planning Group. This group will consistently support the organization of technical issues, evaluation, examination, and implementation assistance for the realization of a circular economy.

[Main Contents of the Service]
1. Metal Recycling Technology Support
・Melting tests of metal scrap, trial production of recycled materials
  ・Trial production of plate materials, etc., from collected scrap through melting analysis, rolling, and heat treatment.
   *Non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, etc.) can also be considered.

2. Recycled Resin Evaluation Technology Support
  ・Thermal properties, mechanical properties, fatigue strength, environmental resistance evaluation, chemical analysis, adhesion.

3. Battery Recycling Technology Support
  ・Recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries.
  ・Quality evaluation of battery materials regenerated from black mass (mainly electrode material mixture).

4. Automotive Parts Dismantling and Reverse Engineering Support
  ・Dismantling of car bodies, batteries, motors, and resin parts.

5. Dismantling and Sorting Process Experiment Support
  ・Verification of processes in recycling and recycled material manufacturing using laboratory experimental facilities.

  ・Investigation of magnet heat treatment for motor remanufacturing.

6. Efficiency Improvement Support through DX Technology
  ・Large-scale scrap analysis for training data to achieve advanced AI sorting.
  ・High-precision scrap sorting using AI and machine learning.

7. Technical Information Research Service
  ・Research on the latest recycling technologies, material evaluation methods, and regulatory trends.
