YUGEN Gallery (4F KD Minami-Aoyama Bldg., 3-1-31 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo) will hold the collection exhibition "Ever-Changing -YUGEN collections-" from Saturday, April 4, to Friday, April 24, 2026. The exhibition is composed around the collection that YUGEN Gallery owner Hayashida has gathered through his own intuition and dialogues with the artists.
"Art is a simulator for getting used to change."
Musician and thinker Brian Eno defined the essence of expression in his book, A Year with Swollen Appendices. In an unpredictable modern era, engaging with art can be considered an intellectual and sensory process that shakes up existing values and allows us to continuously update ourselves.
The collection that owner Hayashida has gathered through intuition and dialogue embodies a "power to affirm change" that resonates deeply with Eno's philosophy.
However, this is not a retrospective. By juxtaposing works collected in the past with the current expressions of the same artists, the exhibition presents the plurality of the "present." What emerges is not a linear progression, but layers of time where difference and repetition, rupture and connection intersect. The works do not exist as isolated entities; they generate new meanings through temporal shifts and responsive relationships.
AKIKO / Takashi Yamamoto dismantle the systems of language and text, shaking the very premises of meaning generation.
Mikio Hasui / Yuji Suga reconsider the relationship between the visible and the invisible through serene realism and lyricism.
Masahiro Masuda / Yo Nagao reconstruct subjective experiences such as memory and déjà vu, expanding the boundaries of perception.
Susumu Matsuura / EDO and YUMEKA embrace the noise and excess inherent in the contemporary visual environment to establish new rhythms.
Through the filter of a single collector's gaze, these works embody "what art can do" from different angles. While existing in different phases, they intersect in the question of how we perceive and accept "change."
A collection is not a completed record of the past. It is an endless simulation designed to connect the "present" that artists continue to challenge with the "future" that we receive.
We hope that through this exhibition, which showcases the trajectories and powerful current positions of the artists captured by owner Hayashida's aesthetic eye, a new perspective for surviving change will sprout within you.
