JCOM and Japanese Red Cross Society Conduct Survey on Disaster Preparedness Awareness Among Young People: Over 1 in 5 Young People Have 'Never Taken Any Action' Regarding Disaster Preparedness

JCOM Co., Ltd. (J:COM, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director and President: Yoichi Iwaki), in collaboration with the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS, Location: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Atsushi Seike), conducted a "Survey on Disaster Preparedness Awareness among Young People" targeting young people (1,032 individuals aged 18-24 residing nationwide).

<Background> Amidst a series of natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods occurring across various regions, daily disaster preparedness has become an important issue for society as a whole. Particularly in spring, many people begin living alone due to advancing to higher education or starting a new job, marking a time when living environments and information gathering methods change significantly. On the other hand, in an unfamiliar new life, there is a high possibility that knowledge and preparation regarding disaster risks in the new residential area and evacuation sites are insufficient. Therefore, this survey was conducted primarily among young people embarking on such new lives, to understand their awareness and anxieties regarding disasters, means of obtaining information, and their actions related to disaster preparedness.

<Survey Summary> - Approximately 60% of young people nationwide believe that they may experience a major disaster requiring evacuation within the next 5 years. - Over 80% of young people cited "earthquakes" as the disaster they feel most anxious about. - Over 80% of young people believe that disaster preparedness is "necessary for themselves." - Over 1 in 5 young people responded that they have "never taken any action" regarding disaster preparedness. - More than half of young people responded that they obtain disaster-related information through "TV" and "X" (Twitter).
