Why target adult ballerinas now?
Over the past few years, the number of people starting ballet as adults has continued to increase.
It is said that the ballet population in Japan is 250,000, but due to the declining birthrate, the number of child students is trending downwards.
However, the growth rate of people in their 60s and 70s is remarkable, and a large percentage of those in their 50s and 60s participate in "Ballet Competitions for Adults," which are thriving as venues to showcase the results of their daily lessons.
However, while there are some costumes developed for adults, the majority of costumes worn on stage feature highly exposed designs with wide-open backs.
While competitions are booming, it is also true that some people hesitate to perform on stage because they are "embarrassed to wear that costume."
Furthermore, many forcibly wear costumes made with silhouettes for younger dancers, and it is not uncommon to see them dancing while worrying about back fat or shaking upper arms.
"Since it is a special stage performance, I want to eliminate anything that causes stress other than dancing as much as possible."
"I want to dance looking as beautiful as possible."
We have heard many such earnest desires of adult ballerinas during our daily costume production.
This is what led to the idea for the "Prima allongé."
Everyone who dances, watches, and teaches ballet can be happy. It is truly the birth of a savior.
A product born from the enthusiasm of a "dancing costume maker"
Akiko Kimura, the representative of Jardin des Costumes, is a 52-year-old "dancing costume maker" who regularly attends lessons and stands on stage whenever there is an opportunity. Because she has been dancing ballet for over 40 years since childhood, she understands the feelings of the junior generation, adult ballerinas, and those who teach.
What should we consider for adults to look beautiful on stage?
We began developing the project around the time our Paris exhibition in September 2024 settled down. Introduced by a childhood friend familiar with knitwear and innerwear manufacturing, we approached a certain innerwear maker in China.
We made prototypes several times starting the year before last, but our intentions were not well conveyed, and the plan hit a setback.
We opened a stall in the lobby of a competition venue, where we enjoy communicating with adult ballerinas.
Amidst all this, we happened to meet someone from Nawa Co., Ltd. and talked to them, to which they replied, "We can probably do that."
When we had them make a trial piece, a prototype very close to our image was produced. The sewing technical issues we had initially been concerned about could also be cleared, so we restarted the project. This was right after the beginning of 2026.
From there, things progressed rapidly.
