JAL began construction of a new factory (hereinafter the "New Gear Factory") in the Haneda Airport maintenance area on May 19, 2026, to conduct maintenance on aircraft landing gear, with completion scheduled for the end of December 2027. In conjunction with this, JAL established a new company, "Landing gear Innovation Factory Co., Ltd.," on June 8, 2026, to hold the real estate associated with the New Gear Factory. At the New Gear Factory, JAL aims to build a next-generation hub that meets global aviation demand by not only consolidating currently dispersed functions but also introducing numerous automated labor-saving equipment and cutting-edge technology facilities, which are being introduced in Japan for the first time, to further strengthen the landing gear maintenance technology cultivated by JAL over many years.
A landing gear is an essential piece of equipment, often referred to as the "legs" of an aircraft, that supports the airframe during takeoff, landing, and ground movement. The overhaul maintenance (hereinafter "gear maintenance") performed at this factory is a large-scale task carried out after removing the gear from the aircraft approximately every 10 years. It is a crystallization of technical expertise, requiring high-level know-how and specialized equipment, including plating technology and its next-generation alternative, thermal spray technology, as well as special metal processing, painting, and non-destructive testing.
JAL has been involved in the gear maintenance of large aircraft for over 50 years and has grown into one of the world's leading gear maintenance hubs. By consolidating functions and introducing cutting-edge technology at the New Gear Factory, JAL aims to solve social issues and create value through the following:
- Inheritance of technical skills and human resource development: Passing on JAL's experienced technical skills to the next generation. - Improvement of productivity: Enhancing quality and production efficiency through function consolidation and state-of-the-art equipment. - Environmental consideration: Reducing environmental impact by constructing a modern, eco-friendly building.
Gear maintenance will continue to be carried out primarily by JAL Engineering Co., Ltd., which is responsible for aircraft maintenance within the JAL Group, contributing to the safety of skies in Japan and around the world, and helping to advance the Japanese aviation industry.
