About the designated intractable disease 'ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)'
It is an intractable disease in which the motor nerves that move the body age and gradually become unable to move.
Due to the degeneration of nerves that govern movement, commands to the muscles are no longer transmitted, causing muscle weakness, but consciousness, the five senses, and intelligence remain normal. Life expectancy after onset is said to be 3 to 5 years. It is estimated there are 400,000 patients worldwide and about 10,000 in Japan.
As ALS progresses, symptoms such as movement disorders due to paralysis of the limbs, communication disorders, and swallowing disorders occur, ultimately leading to respiratory failure, requiring the attachment of an artificial respirator to prolong life.
