Idemitsu Energy Solutions Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and Radi-cool Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) are pleased to announce the results of a demonstration project regarding the energy-saving performance of the radiative cooling paint "Radi-cool," conducted at the "Hakata Port Bayside Museum" in Fukuoka City. In this project, we confirmed that air conditioning power consumption was reduced by up to 31.7% under strict weather comparison conditions (described below).
Background and Purpose of the Demonstration Project Fukuoka City has set a challenge goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by fiscal year 2040 and is promoting the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in public and private facilities. As many buildings in the port area have structures susceptible to the effects of sunlight, we conducted this demonstration project to verify the energy-saving effects as part of our decarbonization initiatives.
Key Results of the Demonstration Project: Correlation Between Temperature Suppression and Power Reduction Confirmed The results of this project confirmed a reduction of up to 34.3°C in roof surface temperature and up to 9.7°C in attic space temperature. Furthermore, regarding air conditioning power consumption, when compared under identical weather conditions (global solar radiation ±0.3 MJ/day, maximum temperature difference less than ±1.0°C), a reduction of up to 31.7% was confirmed, with an average reduction of 18.1% (across 5 cases) before and after painting.
Synergistic Factors Supporting Energy-Saving Effects: Heat Dissipation Characteristics at Night Due to Radiative Cooling A factor contributing to the high energy-saving effect is the characteristic of "continuing to dissipate heat even at night." Because the space remained in a pre-cooled state until the following morning, the power load required for startup was reduced, which is believed to have contributed significantly to energy savings.
Future Outlook Following the results of this demonstration at Hakata Port, we will provide this as a concrete solution that goes beyond mere "heat countermeasures." - Accelerate energy conservation in public facilities, contributing significantly to achieving regional carbon neutrality goals. - Achieve both direct cost suppression through reduced air conditioning power consumption and improved corporate value through the reduction of Scope 2 emissions. - Improve labor environments and enhance employee safety through heatstroke prevention, thanks to the cooling effect that reaches the attic space.
About the Radiative Cooling Material "Radi-Cool" By combining conventional high solar reflectance technology with high heat dissipation technology, this material prevents heat accumulation on the product surface while also absorbing and radiating heat from the underside. This enables the simultaneous realization of zero-energy efficiency improvements and the maintenance of a comfortable indoor environment.
