HOYA Corporation Eye Care Company (Headquarters: Nakano-ku, Tokyo), which operates the contact lens specialty store "Eyecity," concluded a "Tripartite Agreement on the Collection of Used Disposable Contact Lens Cases" with Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, and The Ocean and Japan Project in Shimane on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

This initiative was realized by aligning the environmental vision of Gotsu City—"The Gonokawa River and the Sea of Japan, keeping the beautiful green mountains forever"—with the activities of The Ocean and Japan Project in Shimane, which operates as part of The Nippon Foundation's Ocean and Japan Project aiming for "zero ocean waste," and the goals of the "Eyecity eco Project," which seeks to further build a "circular society (reduce, reuse, recycle)."

Under this agreement, Gotsu City and The Ocean and Japan Project in Shimane will conduct information dissemination and collection activities regarding the used disposable contact lens case collection program managed by our company, thereby raising awareness among citizens about reducing plastic waste and recycling resources. We will continue to promote the "Eyecity eco Project" so that our company can contribute, even in a small way, to the realization of the SDGs society that is expanding globally.

Eyecity eco Project The "Eyecity eco Project" is a recycling initiative that collects used disposable contact lens cases, which are recyclable. In addition to Eyecity stores nationwide, dedicated boxes are installed at approximately 8,800 locations across the country, including local governments, companies, and schools that support the activity. Launched in 2010 as the first of its kind in the industry, the project is now in its 16th year, aiming to contribute to society in three ways: 1. Environmental conservation through the recycling of empty cases, 2. Support for the independence and employment of people with disabilities, and 3. Donations to the Japan Eye Bank Association.

Since the start of the project, we have been conducting wide-ranging collection activities with the support and cooperation of many organizations, local governments, and customers. Regardless of the brand or the store where they were purchased, the collected cases are sold to recycling manufacturers. The proceeds are donated to the Japan Eye Bank Association to help those who wish to regain their sight. However, approximately 4,000 tons of these cases are still disposed of as waste annually. Therefore, we will continue to work on expanding this circle of social contribution activities with the cooperation of even more people.

Current Number of Participating Organizations (as of February 2026) - Schools: 3,346 (including elementary, junior high, high schools, universities, and vocational schools) - Companies: 1,323 companies, 4,664 locations (including offices and branches) - Local Governments: 472 locations (including public facilities) We are always looking for organizations to cooperate with our collection activities.
