'Thinking about the world from Ukraine' Photo Exhibition starting April 19 at Miyakojima Radix

Now that over 80 years have passed since the end of the war, and the balance of peace maintained by Russia, Israel, and the United States has begun to collapse, a planned exhibition will be held to provide an opportunity to think about the world through the situation in Ukraine. As April 26 of this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl (Chernobyl) nuclear accident, it will be introduced alongside the Russia-Ukraine war. The creator is Shinzo Kimura, a unique contemporary art creator who also has a facet as a radiation hygienist. Kimura visited the site about 13 years after the Chornobyl nuclear accident, and since then, has been investigating the reality of radioactive contamination while living a double life in Japan and Ukraine. This time, through the eve of the Euromaidan revolution in February 2014, the occupation of the Crimean Peninsula by the Russian military, Kyiv where war momentum was rising, and the persistent attacks by Russia on the Chornobyl nuclear power plant via drones and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, the exhibition introduces the daily lives of illegal residents known as Samosely and the Chornobyl nuclear power plant of the past, which can never be seen again.

Representative Director of the Ukraine support group 'Humanitarian Supports.' After working at the Science and Technology Agency's National Institute of Radiological Sciences, he has been conducting radiation exposure surveys in the areas affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident since 2000. For his achievements, he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at Zhytomyr National Agroecological University (now Polissia National University) and an Honorary Doctorate from the Marzeiev Institute of Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Immediately after the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, he entered the site and strove to prevent radiation exposure among residents. Currently, he has established a research base in the Tsushima district of Namie Town, where residents were forced to evacuate due to the nuclear accident, and is working together with local residents on activities for the region's recovery and revitalization.
