The 'Fukuyaku Project' picture book team, part of Fukuoka University Faculty of Pharmacy's problem-solving learning program, has been selected for the Foundation for Self-Medication Promotion of OTC Medicines, Japan's public awareness initiative. Self-medication refers to individuals managing their own health and treating minor ailments independently. The foundation supports research and programs to promote this concept.
This initiative aims to deliver health-related information—such as the importance of medication and heatstroke prevention—to young children who may struggle with text-based learning, using original picture books to make the content accessible and engaging. The Fukuyaku Project team has previously placed their original picture books in pediatric wards at Fukuoka University Hospital and local community pharmacies.
A key focus of this initiative is encouraging young children's 'autonomous actions' through picture books. Rather than taking medicine or drinking water simply because adults instruct them, the goal is for children to understand 'why it is necessary' and independently adopt healthy behaviors. The team believes that cultivating such autonomous health habits from an early age will form the foundation for lifelong self-medication practices.

Kazutaka Tsutsumi, team leader and third-year pharmacy student, said: 'We repeatedly confronted the challenge of communicating with young children, discussing and refining our approach as a team of ten. Being selected for the foundation's program confirms that our activities are socially valuable. We hope to continue delivering picture books that inspire children to feel empowered to protect their own health.'
