Fukuoka University Hospital is newly participating this year in awareness activities aimed at promoting understanding of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), in line with 'World IBD Day' on May 19.
The number of IBD patients in Japan is increasing annually, currently reaching about 400,000. IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, and fatigue. Although it is a disease that requires long-term treatment and consideration in daily life, its symptoms are not easily visible from the outside, leading it to be called an 'invisible illness.' Patients face challenges in gaining understanding in their social lives.
Every year on May 19, 'World IBD Day,' awareness activities are held around the world. Initiatives to broaden interest and understanding of IBD are developed, such as lighting up buildings in purple, the symbol color for IBD awareness. Our hospital is also conducting a light-up from this fiscal year to promote social understanding for patients.
Our hospital established an IBD Center in April 2021. As a specialized institution providing the latest medical technology and advanced treatment, it treats about 1,000 patients with ulcerative colitis and about 500 patients with Crohn's disease, accepting patients not only from Kyushu prefectures but also from the Kanto and Kansai regions.
