Shimoda Aquarium (Location: 3-22-31 Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, General Manager: Koichi Keino), an experiential aquarium, will hold a touching event on July 12, 2026 (Sun.) and July 14, 2026 (Tue.) to commemorate Gelatin Day.

About Gelatin Day

Every year, July 14 is Gelatin Day. In commemoration of gelatin being a popular ingredient in French confectionery and cuisine, the Japan Gelatin & Collagen Industry Association established July 14 (Bastille Day), a representative French holiday, as "Gelatin Day." In conjunction with this, Shimoda Aquarium will hold a touching event where visitors can touch jellyfish that "seem to be made of gelatin." The type of jellyfish that can be touched this time is the Moon Jellyfish (Mizukurage). While its tentacles have a mild venom, visitors will be able to touch the non-venomous bell under the guidance of our aquarist staff. We encourage you to take this opportunity to experience touching a Moon Jellyfish.

[Event Dates and Times] July 12 (Sun.), July 14 (Tue.) 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

[Location] Jellyfish Exhibit Room "Clararium"

*Exhibition periods may be changed without prior notice due to the condition of the organisms.

About Shimoda Aquarium

Shimoda Aquarium opened in March 1967 as an experiential aquarium operated by Shimoda Aqua Service Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujita Kanko Inc. It is one of the few aquariums in Japan that utilizes a natural inlet. In addition to dolphins, sea lions, seals, penguins, and otters, it exhibits and breeds creatures mainly inhabiting the waters near the Izu Peninsula. It features extensive interaction programs, such as feeding and swimming with dolphins, and its greatest characteristic is the very close proximity between visitors and the animals.
