Research Presentation

Yutaro Kawaguchi, our specialist advisor and embryologist, presented research on the following topic:

Title: Investigation of Optimal Fertilization Methods in Advanced Reproductive Medicine Using Cryopreserved Sperm—Toward Male Fertility Preservation

【Background and Objectives】

Currently, sperm cryopreservation is commonly used in assisted reproductive technology (ART), frequently selected in cases such as 'a partner’s business trip or overseas assignment on the day of oocyte retrieval, making fresh sperm submission difficult.' In recent years, it has become evident that advancing male age is associated with decreased pregnancy rates, increased miscarriage rates, and higher health risks for offspring. Consequently, the demand for young men to freeze their sperm in anticipation of future fertility (male fertility preservation) is expected to grow.

This study aims to examine and evaluate 'which fertilization method (IVF or ICSI) yields the best treatment performance' for patients using cryopreserved sperm, thereby contributing to the optimization of future male fertility preservation.

Comment

Aligned with the conference theme 'Fertility—Hope for the Future,' I presented research focused on male fertility preservation.

Recently, the impact of advancing male age on pregnancy rates, miscarriage rates, and offspring health risks has gained recognition. In the future, more men may consider freezing their sperm at a younger age for future family planning. I firmly believe that the data from this study will serve as a crucial benchmark supporting such forward-looking decisions.

The conference itself was vibrant, with a large number of participants. The venue offered entertainment elements such as stamp rallies, painting experiences, and guided tours of 'Koedo' (Kawagoe), making it an enriching experience. Personally, as someone who once aspired to become an astronaut, attending the keynote lecture by Professor Wakayama, renowned for his 'space mice' research, was an exceptionally valuable and inspiring experience.
