Miyagi Prefecture, ENEOS Corporation (hereinafter referred to as ENEOS), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (hereinafter referred to as SMBC), and Yoshikawa Oil Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Yoshikawa Oil) are pleased to announce that the four entities will jointly implement a demonstration project (hereinafter referred to as the Project) for the collection and recycling of household used cooking oil, starting from April 1, 2026. The project will utilize locations such as supermarkets and large-scale condominiums (residential areas) within Miyagi Prefecture, as well as SMBC's Sendai Branch, as collection points.
The Project aims to contribute to the formation of a sustainable circular economy by collecting used cooking oil from general households at collection points established in municipalities within Miyagi Prefecture. The collected oil will be processed for recycling with a view to its utilization in the production of biofuels, including SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
Used cooking oil is a valuable resource that can be used as a raw material for SAF and biodiesel fuel. However, in Japan, approximately 100,000 tons of household used cooking oil are generated annually, and most of it is discarded as burnable waste without being recycled.
Through this Project, the four entities will promote the effective utilization of household used cooking oil as an unused resource by advancing collaborations with various companies within Miyagi Prefecture, thereby contributing to resource circulation within the prefecture. In the future, ENEOS aims to produce SAF using the collected oil as a raw material.
The four entities will continue to cooperate and aim to expand the number of participating companies and collection stores, striving to establish a resource circulation model for household used cooking oil.
