eMotion Fleet Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Directors: Shuji Shiraki, Denis Ilich; hereinafter "eMotion Fleet"), which provides one-stop services for the introduction and operation of commercial EVs, announces that it has introduced its self-developed Energy Management System (hereinafter "EMS") to Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City; hereinafter "Nishi-Nippon Railroad"), with full operation scheduled to commence in April 2026.
This initiative involves the integrated cloud-based management of EV buses from different manufacturers and charging facilities at Nishi-Nippon Railroad's Island City Bus Depot (Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City), which boasts one of the largest bus fleets in Japan. It aims to achieve electricity cost optimization (peak cutting), improved operational efficiency, and decarbonization simultaneously.
Background and Objectives
The Nishi-Nippon Railroad Group aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and has a track record of introducing over 50 EV buses, primarily "retrofit EV buses" converted from diesel buses, with plans to continue expanding the introduction of EV buses.
With the introduction of domestic EV buses and other vehicles, the integrated management of multi-brand vehicles and charging facilities, and the suppression of power peaks (reduction of electricity costs) due to the increasing number of vehicles, have become urgent issues. eMotion Fleet's EMS, which excels in energy control highly linked to operation plans regardless of manufacturer, was adopted. The goal is to establish a standard operating model for large-scale introduction at the Island City Bus Depot.
Overview and Features of This Implementation
1. Integrated Support for Multi-Brand Vehicles
The EMS provides centralized management for a total of 9 vehicles, including "retrofit electric buses" and Isuzu Motors' "Erga EV" deployed at the Island City Bus Depot, regardless of manufacturer.
2. Automation of Power Peak Cutting Linked to Operation Plans
The system automatically links daily operation plans (timetables) with charging plans, ensuring the necessary charge for the next day's operation while performing advanced power demand peak cutting through variable output control. Operation managers can entrust complex charge/discharge management and electricity cost optimization to the system simply by assigning vehicles.
3. Charging Authentication Linkage Minimizing On-site Burden
The system accurately links combinations of EV buses and chargers from different manufacturers with on-site operations. Drivers simply plug into an available charger and perform the prescribed authentication process to complete preparation, eliminating complex judgments and operations on-site, prioritizing burden reduction.
Future Developments
Based on the operational achievements of this project, eMotion Fleet will strengthen solutions to further advance and automate the increasingly complex operation and energy management of commercial EVs. We will continue to contribute to the construction of a mobility society where transportation operators nationwide, including Nishi-Nippon Railroad, can achieve both decarbonization and economic rationality by lowering the hurdles to EV introduction and operation, with the operators themselves taking the lead.
