Hello, I'm Yukko Fujino, a Developmental Science Communication Trainer. I specialize in helping children who stutter and are highly sensitive. I've had a stutter since childhood and lived for years with the fear of 'What if I start stuttering?' Today, drawing from my experience supporting my two daughters through their stuttering, I help parents of children facing similar challenges.
My eldest daughter began stuttering at age two and a half. I repeatedly felt anxious thoughts like, 'It seems worse than yesterday.' When it improved, it would worsen again. When it calmed, it flared up once more. Each time, I questioned myself: 'Did I handle this wrong?' 'What if it never gets better?' I focused solely on the stuttering. But after studying Developmental Science Communication—based on neuroscience, psychology, and education—my perspective changed dramatically. An increase in stuttering doesn't necessarily mean it's getting worse.
Highly sensitive children absorb far more information each day than adults realize.
Environmental changes, relationships, exhaustion from over-effort, anxiety, and tension—
When the brain becomes overloaded by these stressors, stuttering can increase. In other words, fluctuations in stuttering aren't just a 'speech problem.' They're also a signal revealing 'what state the child's brain is in right now.' Moreover, sensitive children become increasingly self-conscious about their speech as stuttering frequency increases.
This can lead to:
- Avoiding speaking - Suppressing what they want to say - Losing confidence in things they want to try
That’s why it’s crucial not to wait passively with thoughts like 'It might get better eventually.' The moment you notice is the right time to act. That’s why I’ve released this e-book, 'What to Read When Stuttering Gets Worse,' summarizing what to observe and how to interact at home when stuttering increases.
In this book, stuttering is not treated as a language issue. Instead, it clearly explains:
- Why stuttering fluctuates - What’s happening in the brain when stuttering increases - What aspects to focus on when interacting
Additionally, it includes practical content families can implement today:
- The relationship between the sensitive child’s brain and stuttering - Verbal cues that reduce brain tension and anxiety - Subtle speaking techniques that reduce stuttering, without the child noticing - Real parent-child transformation stories
In my own experience, by shifting my focus from the stuttering itself to the child’s brain state, my daughter’s stuttering gradually calmed. The key isn’t to focus only on the stuttering. It’s about understanding your child’s state and knowing what kind of interaction they need right now.
I hope this book becomes the starting point for ending the daily struggle of 'It’s getting worse again,' and helps parents discover what they can do today to calm their child’s stuttering.
