Tokyo Denki University (President: Tadahiko Iba) will introduce a new curriculum for liberal arts education starting in fiscal year 2026. The new curriculum will implement five subject areas — "Human Sciences," "English," "Mathematics," "Information," and "Natural Science and Technology" — commonly across all faculties.

The university has been developing a system for university-wide liberal arts education since 2023, aiming to achieve the "Establishment of Liberal Arts Education for Science and Technology" as stated in its mid-term plan "TDU Vision2028" (FY2024-2028). In April 2025, the "Center for Liberal Arts Education," a university-wide faculty organization responsible for liberal arts education, was established.

Heretofore, liberal arts education at our university, under the name "Common Education Subjects," has had separate curricula developed independently at both the Tokyo Senju and Saitama Hatoyama campuses. This time, a unified liberal arts curriculum reflecting the university's founding spirit and educational research philosophy has been formulated. Under the new name "Liberal Arts Subjects," it will be integrated and reorganized into five common subjects for all faculties: "Human Sciences" for humanities and social sciences, "English" for English education, "Mathematics" and "Information" for mathematical and data science, and "Natural Science and Technology" for basic natural sciences.

By comprehensively understanding the four-year learning experience of our students and systematically acquiring liberal arts subjects related to their specialized fields, we will foster human resources capable of contributing to society through science and technology.

Overview of "Liberal Arts Subjects"

Humanities and Social Sciences Subject Category: Human Sciences Overview: This subject aims to broaden students' ways of thinking and values, while also learning about the ethics essential for scientists and engineers, the ability to think multi-dimensionally, the relationship between science and technology and society, and a global perspective.

English Education Subject Category: English Overview: To enable students to gradually acquire the English proficiency required of science and engineering graduates over four years, we use original university materials created with an engineering focus. The curriculum is designed to balance the development of specialized knowledge and English skills.

Mathematical and Data Science Subject Category: Mathematics / Information Overview: Classes are divided according to students' understanding of mathematics, designed for steady learning at their own pace. Data science subjects focus on learning the basics of reading data and utilizing it in specialized fields, equipping students with information utilization skills as scientists and engineers.

Basic Natural Sciences Subject Category: Natural Science and Technology Overview: Emphasis is placed on "hands-on education," where students learn by actively engaging in experiments and practical exercises. By connecting knowledge with practice, students build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes for studying specialized subjects.

About the Center for Liberal Arts Education

The "Center for Liberal Arts Education," established in April 2025, is a faculty organization spanning both the Tokyo Senju and Saitama Hatoyama campuses (all faculties). Approximately 80 faculty members from a wide range of fields involved in common education — such as humanities and social sciences, English education, mathematical and data science, and basic natural sciences — which were previously developed independently on both campuses, belong to this center (as of March 2026). The center's roles are to: 1) be the provider of university-wide liberal arts education, 2) build a liberal arts curriculum characteristic of Tokyo Denki University, and 3) implement curriculum development and quality assurance for these purposes on a university-wide scale. https://www.dendai.ac.jp/about/undergraduate/kyoyo/ First-year subject: "Learning at Tokyo Denki University"
