## Japan Heading Towards an Aging and Multi-Death Society
In 2025, all members of the baby boomer generation will be 75 years or older, marking Japan's entry into a full-fledged multi-death society. Furthermore, the annual number of deaths is projected to peak at approximately 1.7 million in 2040.
While issues related to death are becoming apparent, opportunities to "witness death" at home or in the community are decreasing, and funerals are becoming simpler. As a result, spaces for routinely contemplating death are being lost.
At the same time, changes in family structures and diversification of views on life and death are occurring. We believe there is a need for opportunities where everyone can view death as a personal matter and discuss it with peace of mind.
Therefore, what we aim for is to establish **April 14th as "Good Death Day" every year**. Just as September 1st is "Disaster Prevention Day," we want to make it a day when people of all ages can reflect on their own lives and deaths, and talk about them with family and friends. We believe that by fostering such a culture, it will lead to the "realization of a society where death is not taboo."
## Our Past Initiatives
We have held the Death Fes twice in the past. The second event in 2025 attracted 4,200 visitors, approximately double the number from the first event in 2024. While attendees in their 30s to 50s accounted for the majority, middle-aged people aged 60 and over, and younger generations in their teens and 20s also participated. Through talk sessions and experiential content, we have created opportunities for dialogue related to "death."
The themes offered were also very broad, covering views on life and death, technology, community, and other topics that, starting from death, lead to contemplating one's way of living.
## Towards an Era of Well-being in Both Life and Death
In 2026, the third year of the event, we will create a space to "open up death" in unprecedented ways, such as exhibitions where death can be experienced with all five senses, and pitch events where people can freely discuss death.
Death Fes has aimed to "continue for 10 years" from its inception.
However, what we truly want to achieve is not merely the continuation of the event itself.
What lies beyond 10 years is a society where death is not taboo, and is seen as continuous with life.
A society where talking about death is no longer special.
To achieve this, an annual event alone is not enough.
We believe this to be true.
Currently, we are expanding our year-round activities, including POP UP exhibitions in various locations nationwide and operating "Living Lab from Death (Death Lab)," which co-creates new value starting from death.
Towards the realization of a society where death can be discussed more freely.
We will ensure this initiative takes root as a culture, not just a temporary trend.
Towards a day when talking about death is no longer special.
We will continue to take steps towards that goal.
"April Dream" is a project by PR TIMES where companies announce dreams they wish to achieve on April 1st. We are seriously committed to realizing this dream.
