Explanation of Each Award
### Computational Social Science Academic Contribution Award Newly established in 2026, this award aims to recognize significant academic contributions in the field of computational social science among members or researchers with a base of operations in Japan, indicating future directions for the field and serving as a role model for next-generation researchers. Award recipients are decided by the society's board of directors following review and recommendation by an annual selection committee.
### Conference Awards In addition, our society annually recognizes excellent research at its annual conference based on votes from attending members and operational committee members, and recommendations from sponsors, through the following awards:
* **Conference Excellence Award**: Awarded to particularly outstanding presentations from all submissions. All authors are recognized. * **Akira Ishii Award (Student Award)**: Awarded to excellent presentations among student submissions that were not selected for the Conference Excellence Award. The first author (student) is recognized. * **Sponsor Award**: Awarded based on recommendations from sponsors. All authors are recognized.
Award Recipients
### 1st (2026) Computational Social Science Academic Contribution Award **Fuzio Toriumi** (Professor, Department of Systems Innovation, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo)
**Reason for Award**: Professor Toriumi is a pioneering researcher who laid the foundation for computational social science in Japan, pioneering this field as an interdisciplinary research area by introducing information engineering methods to social science challenges. Through rapid responses to societal crises, such as real-time analysis of SNS data and fake news research during the COVID-19 pandemic, he has enhanced his international reputation. Furthermore, by advocating for "information health," he has made pioneering proposals including institutional design and reconsideration of economic structures for the sound development of the information environment. He also led the "Werewolf Intelligence" project, promoting the exploration of social capabilities such as AI consensus building and ethical dialogue, developing original research that bridges technology and society. Through these academic contributions and international influence, Professor Toriumi has achieved outstanding results in both the development and social implementation of computational social science. (For more detailed reasons, refer to the HP).
**Recipient's Biography**: Engaged in research on computational social science, AI social implementation, and information environment and well-being. Completed doctoral program at Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2004 (Ph.D. Engineering). After serving as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Nagoya University Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering and as Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, he has held his current position since 2021. He serves as Vice President of the Society for Computational Social Science, Director of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Director of the Society of Information Science, and Editorial Board Member for the international journal Scientific Reports.
Additionally, an award ceremony and commemorative lecture were held at the 5th Annual Meeting of the Society for Computational Social Science.
