Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, JRC), SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation (hereinafter, SKY Perfect JSAT), and Sharp Corporation (hereinafter, Sharp) will collaborate to promote the Ministry of Defense's public announcement on "Development and Demonstration of Resilient Communication System Technology Compatible with Multi-Orbit (※1)," for which JRC was selected on February 4, 2026. The three companies will jointly develop and demonstrate a next-generation communication system.

This public announcement aims to enhance the resilience (※2) and reliability of communication infrastructure, among other objectives, in response to the growing demand for communication in disaster prevention and defense sectors, and the need to secure stable communication under various circumstances such as natural disasters and unforeseen events. The goal is to build a next-generation communication system that utilizes a combination of GEO, MEO, and LEO (※3) satellites. This will enable multi-orbit compatibility by establishing control technology that seamlessly switches between satellite communication systems, which are currently individual systems optimized for each satellite.

During the implementation period until March 31, 2028, JRC will primarily oversee the overall project, SKY Perfect JSAT will focus on building a seamless communication network, and Sharp will lead the development of multi-orbit compatible satellite communication user terminals (※4). The three companies will develop a communication system compatible with multi-orbit GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites and verify the improvement of communication network resilience.

Through this demonstration, the three companies aim to improve communication reliability under various circumstances, including disasters and emergencies, and contribute to maintaining social functions and ensuring safety and security.
