Background of Development

In April 2026, Japan will implement the 'Post-Divorce Joint Custody System' as a historic legal reform.

However, there is a significant gap between 'having joint custody' and 'being able to smoothly co-parent in practice.' Various challenges lie in co-parenting for divorced parents, such as the burden of adjusting parenting schedules, psychological resistance to direct contact after divorce, and rules and role-sharing regarding education and medical care.
