Under 40% 'Participated' in Early Career Education, Over 60% 'Never Participated', Showing Lack of Spread. Content is 70% 'Guidance/Briefings', Half are 'Classes' with Credits [Class of 2028 Student Survey]

Gakujo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) conducted an internet survey on "career education (career formation support provided by universities and companies)" during their first and second years of university, targeting university and graduate students scheduled to graduate (complete studies) in March 2028. Only slightly less than 40% of students had "participated" in career education, while over 60% had "never participated," revealing the reality that career education for underclassmen has not yet spread sufficiently. Regarding the number of times participated, "2 to 4 times" accounted for the majority, and "10 times or more" was 12.9%. The most common content of the career education participated in was "guidance/briefings on careers" at 70%. This was followed by "classes on career design/career formation (with credits)" at 49.4%, showing that half had experienced it in classes. Few students participated in programs involving corporations.

The Industry-Academia Council on the Future of Recruitment and University Education categorized internships and other programs into four types in its 2021 report "Industry-Academia Collaboration Initiatives in Student Career Formation Support," implemented from the class of 2025. "Career Education" is positioned as Type 2, mainly for underclassmen to "think about their own careers (vocational and employment views)," and universities and companies were requested to actively implement and expand it. To explore the current state of career education and students' reception, we surveyed students scheduled to graduate in 2028.
