Schooltakt to Host "Self-Regulated Learning" Seminar with Dr. Mantaro Higuchi and Dr. Ryo Shirasugi

The seminar will feature leading educators Dr. Mantaro Higuchi, Associate Professor at Chubu University, and Dr. Ryo Shirasugi, CodeTakt's Education Practice Research Fellow.

## Background

Many teachers attempting student-centered lesson planning face anxieties and conflicts, such as "Will the class function if left to the children?" or "Will learning content not be retained?" In recent years, practices incorporating the concept of "self-regulated learning" have become widespread. However, it is not uncommon for gaps to arise between theory and practice, where "leaving it to children equals neglect" or methods are "merely perfunctory."

Based on the content of their co-authored book, "Is Your Self-Regulated Learning Wrong? – A Failure-Proof Approach" (Meiji Tosho Shuppan), Dr. Mantaro Higuchi and Dr. Ryo Shirasugi will organize these on-site challenges as "types of misconceptions." They will unravel them from both theoretical and practical perspectives and present "prescriptions" for each type.

Furthermore, this seminar is a participatory live seminar with a Q&A session involving participants. By addressing the "real concerns and questions" of teachers on-site in a closed environment where no archive distribution is provided, the seminar aims to encourage teachers to confidently implement learning that empowers children.

## Examples of "Misconception Types" Regarding Self-Regulated Learning Commonly Encountered On-Site:

- "Relinquishing support (dumping)" type
- Believing that entrusting children means teachers relinquishing support, or that support should not be provided.
- "Self-selection = Proactive" type
- Believing that self-regulated learning is achieved simply by creating situations for self-selection and self-determination.
- "Worksheet-focused" type
- Being satisfied with merely tracing the form of reflection sheets, making the sheets themselves the objective.

Associate Professor, Faculty of Contemporary Education, Chubu University

After serving at Osaka prefectural public elementary schools, Osaka Kyoiku University Ikeda Elementary School, Kyoto Kyoiku University Momoyama Elementary School, and Mori Nuvel Gakuin Elementary School, he assumed his current position. Organizer of the online salon "Sensei House." Author of "Is Your Free-Paced Learning Wrong?" (co-authored, Meiji Tosho), "Prepare for the Next Curriculum Guidelines! 11 Quests You Can Start 'Now'" (solo, Meiji Tosho), "Is Your Self-Regulated Learning Wrong? – A Failure-Proof Approach" (co-authored with Dr. Ryo Shirasugi, Meiji Tosho).
