Tainan International Dragon Boat Championship Kicks Off June 17 with Over 4,000 Participants

Marking the 100th anniversary of the Tainan Canal, the Tainan International Dragon Boat Championship is scheduled to take place on the Tainan Canal for five consecutive days starting June 17. A total of 163 teams and over 4,000 people have registered, representing a nearly 50% increase in participation compared to last year. The Tainan City Sports Bureau reported at a municipal meeting today that the championship will feature categories including open, high school, college, corporate, and government groups, with a total prize pool of NT$1.8 million and a top prize of NT$300,000 per category. Additionally, for the first time, the city will install two 250-inch large screens on the north bank of the canal to broadcast the races in real-time. The event will also feature over 140 market stalls, including food, cultural and creative products, local agricultural specialties, and tech-fitness activities, creating a lively atmosphere. Furthermore, in celebration of the 'Canal Centennial,' the city has invited the 'Coming True' Fire Dance Troupe to perform, along with shows by the Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Culture Group and the Nine Heavens Folk Arts Troupe, transforming the dragon boat race from a traditional sports event into a city festival that integrates cultural performances.
