Italy's Aeolian Islands: From Fascist 'Devil's Island' to Resort Paradise

Lipari, May 25 (CNA) - More and more Taiwanese travelers are including the Aeolian Islands in their Italian travel plans. The archipelago, consisting of seven islands off the northeastern coast of Sicily, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasting unique volcanic terrain and stunning seascapes. It also has a history of transforming from "Mussolini's Devil's Island" into a resort paradise. The islands are currently promoting the "Brand Eolie," supported by the Messina municipal government and over 100 local businesses, aiming to expand the tourism market and break seasonal travel limitations. The Aeolian Islands are like an evolving archaeological park, where volcanic ash and lava have perfectly preserved historical relics. Lipari, the largest and most populous island, is filled with star-rated hotels and guesthouses, attracting 200,000 tourists annually. During the reporter's visit, no other Asian tourists were encountered, suggesting significant potential for the Taiwanese market. At the main castle in Lipari, historian Pino La Greca recounted the local history of "anti-fascist resistance." During the fascist regime from 1926 to 1943, the island served as a prison for political dissidents, with over 500 people exiled there. The "Great Escape of 1929," where three anti-fascist leaders escaped by boat, embarrassed the regime and drew international attention. La Greca emphasized the importance of media freedom and truth. Lipari is also one of the world's most important sources of obsidian. The archaeological museum displays tools from the Stone Age. However, many cheap imitations made of plastic or artificial glass, often from China, are sold to tourists. Artisan Massimo Ziino explained that real obsidian has natural patterns and each piece is unique. Because the craftsmanship is difficult and time-consuming, fewer people are willing to engage in it.
