Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung: US Policy Toward Taiwan Remains Unchanged After Trump-Xi Summit

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung stated today that Taiwan and the US have institutional communication channels, and after the Trump-Xi summit, the US government provided a briefing confirming that US policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged. He added that the second batch of arms sales to Taiwan is proceeding according to legal procedures. The Foreign and National Defense Committee of the Legislative Yuan invited Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen today to report on the 'Impact of the Post-Summit Geopolitical Situation on Taiwan's Diplomacy and National Security.' When asked about Trump's remarks regarding new arms sales, Lin emphasized that Taiwan and the US maintain institutional communication channels and that the US policy toward Taiwan has not changed. He noted that the US and Taiwan are aligned in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and that the US remains committed to strengthening Taiwan's defense capabilities in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act. Lin pointed out that the foundation of the Taiwan Relations Act is the peaceful resolution of disputes, which China is unilaterally undermining. The current challenge is how to prevent China from disrupting the status quo, emphasizing that peace relies on strength, and strength relies on deterrence. He criticized China as a 'troublemaker' in the strategic competition between the US and China. Lin stressed that Taiwan enjoys bipartisan support from both the US executive and legislative branches, concluding that while Taiwan should remain vigilant, there is no need for excessive concern. Regarding arms sales, he noted that the Trump administration's arms sales to Taiwan are at a historic high, and the second batch is currently moving through the necessary legal processes.
