3 Suspects in Keelung Face Detention for Allegedly Smuggling High-End NVIDIA Chip Servers to China, Hong Kong, and Macau

(CNA, Keelung, May 21, Reporter Wang Chao-yu) Three men, including one surnamed Yu, are suspected of falsifying data to illegally sell servers equipped with high-end NVIDIA chips to China, Hong Kong, and Macau. After conducting searches and interrogations yesterday, the Keelung District Prosecutors Office requested the court this morning to detain and hold the three men, including Yu, incommunicado. High-end AI servers produced by Supermicro Computer, Inc. are strictly regulated by the United States because they are equipped with high-end NVIDIA chips, and their sale to China, Hong Kong, and Macau is completely prohibited. Prosecutors suspect that Yu, a man surnamed Wang, and a man surnamed Chen conspired to purchase dozens of servers in Taiwan, each with a market value exceeding NT$10 million, to sell them to China, Hong Kong, and Macau for huge profits. The three men allegedly altered sensitive information, such as server model numbers, in their export declaration documents, and are suspected of crimes including forgery. Prosecutor Hsiao Yung-li directed the Coast Guard Administration's Keelung Investigation Branch yesterday to search 12 locations, including the residences of the three men and related companies, and seize evidence. The three men and relevant witnesses were also arrested and interrogated. After an overnight interrogation, the prosecutor determined that the three men are strongly suspected of committing forgery and other crimes, and pose a risk of fleeing, destroying evidence, and colluding with accomplices and witnesses.
