DPP on Presidential Impeachment: Stance is Consistent, No Indecision

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus stated that its position, narrative, and logic regarding the impeachment case are crystal clear. It does not welcome political strife and believes everyone should focus on national security, economic development, and political stability. The caucus members will unanimously enter to cast their votes against it, with no issue of indecision. In a first for the Republic of China's constitutional history, the Legislative Yuan held a roll-call vote on the impeachment of President Lai Ching-te this morning. DPP caucus whip Tsai Chi-chang stated in an interview before the vote that the DPP caucus meeting today will pass a resolution for all caucus members to unanimously vote against the motion. 'What the people care about now is whether we can work together to boost the economy and improve livelihoods,' he said. 'What the public does not want to see is the opposition parties focusing on politics and instigating struggles.' He added that this is something no one wants to see. When asked by the media about the initial reports that the DPP caucus would not participate in the vote and why they ultimately decided to, Tsai Chi-chang said that the presidential impeachment case itself 'has no legitimacy whatsoever.' Judging by the standards for impeaching a president, it would be impossible to meet the threshold, and polls show that President Lai's approval ratings are rising. The public has seen President Lai's efforts in policy and welfare. Caucus secretary-general Chuang Jui-hsiung also said that the DPP caucus's attitude towards this impeachment case is very clear: it does not welcome political infighting. The impeachment case does nothing to help the country as a whole. Chuang Jui-hsiung stated that a presidential impeachment is a momentous constitutional matter with a very high threshold. The DPP caucus will not play along with those who instigate political struggles and internal friction. The DPP hopes that everyone can collectively focus on national security, economic development, and a stable political environment. 'Enough with this political strife and verbal sparring,' he said.
