To promote domestic eel and expand the domestic consumption market, the Fisheries Agency, in collaboration with units such as Shin Yeh, has broken the traditional impression of zongzi being primarily pork-based by incorporating eel. This allows consumers to taste both 'mountain delicacies and ocean treasures' in one bite, with the delicious 'eel' flavor. They hope the public will support eel farmers with their actions.
The Fisheries Agency held a press conference at the Xiluo Service Area on National Freeway 1 today for the 'Eel Zongzi, Deliciously 'Eel'!' event. Deputy Director-General of the Fisheries Agency, Miao Tzu-chang, Legislator Liu Chien-kuo, Secretary-General of the National Fishermen's Association of the Republic of China, Lin Chi-tsang, and Chairman of the Taiwan Eel & Shrimp Production Cooperative Union, Tang Ching-tsung, jointly recommended the eel zongzi, shouting 'Taiwan Eel, The Only Choice.'
Miao Tzu-chang stated that Japanese people habitually consume eel in the summer to replenish energy and relieve fatigue. Taiwan's eel production is about 3,000 tons annually, with 95% exported to Japan. To allow domestic consumers to taste high-quality domestic eel, the Fisheries Agency has connected with local aquatic product organizations to offer eel zongzi and grilled eel. These products are available at Shin Yeh-operated national freeway service areas, Provincial Highway Rest Stops operated by the Provincial Highway Service Area Management Center, and e-commerce platforms. In addition to eel products, other domestic aquatic products and processed foods are also sold concurrently.
Liu Chien-kuo mentioned that Yunlin County's eel farming volume accounts for over 66% of Taiwan's total, with nearly 200 eel farming households. Eel is not expensive despite its preciousness and is highly nutritious. The quality of domestic eel is well-recognized. This Dragon Boat Festival, in addition to the traditional pork zongzi, there is a new option: 'Eel Zongzi,' offering a taste of both mountain and sea delicacies. He looks forward to the public supporting eel farmers through their actions.
Tang Ching-tsung pointed out that under the Fisheries Agency's promotion of diversified cuisine, domestic eel is not only used in zongzi but also in stewed soups and grilled eel, allowing consumers to experience different flavors of domestic eel. He welcomes the public to bring the fresh taste to their family dinner tables. (Edited by Chen Jen-hua) 1150516
