Taipei, May 14 (CNA) - Boosted by the strong performance of the U.S. Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, TSMC's stock rose by NT$50 in early trading, driving the Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index (Taiex) above 42,000 points. Although the gains later significantly narrowed, a late surge in TSMC's stock pushed the index to close up 377.25 points.

The Taiex closed at 41751.75, up 377.25 points, or 0.91%, with a turnover of NT$1.216778 trillion.

TSMC reached NT$2,270 in early trading, up NT$50, but its gains later retracted to a low of NT$2,230, up NT$10. However, a sharp rally in late trading led to a close at NT$2,270, up NT$50. Delta Electronics closed at NT$2,155, down NT$10, or 0.46%; Hon Hai closed at NT$244.5, down NT$6.5, or 2.59%. (Editor: Yang Kai-hsiang) 1150514
