Hualien City to Conduct 'Giant Wave Alert' Cell Broadcast Drill on May 18, Public Urged Not to Panic

(Central News Agency, Hualien County, 14th, by reporter Chang Chi) To cope with disasters caused by extreme weather, the Central Weather Administration will conduct a 'Giant Wave Alert' cell broadcast message sending drill in Hualien City from 10 AM to 12 PM on the 18th. The Hualien County Fire Department urges the public not to panic upon receiving the test message.

The Hualien County Fire Department stated that the giant wave alert is targeted at coastal areas that are about to be affected by giant waves of 6 meters or more. The system sends real-time warnings through the disaster prevention alert system to remind people in the warning area to stay away from the coast to avoid harm.

This drill will take place in Hualien City, Hualien County, from 10 AM to 12 PM on May 18. During the drill, people's mobile phones will receive a cell broadcast message.

The drill message will read: '[Giant Wave Alert] This is a message for DISASTER PREVENTION DRILL from CWA. Don’t panic. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call 02-23491217, CWA.'

The Hualien County Fire Department reminds the public that if they receive a real giant wave alert in the future, they should avoid going to the seaside to watch waves, stay away from the coast, and vessels at sea should leave the giant wave area as soon as possible or enter a port for shelter.
