However, Zhang Han, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, today avoided directly answering his specific release date and criticized some media for "repeatedly sensationalizing judicial cases."
Liberty Times previously quoted informed sources as reporting that Fucha would be released in May, but due to an additional year of supplementary punishment, he might not be able to return to Taiwan directly. The report also stated that "the CCP sentenced Fucha to three years for just five books."
China's Taiwan Affairs Office held a regular press conference today, and a Central News Agency reporter asked for clarification on Fucha's specific release date and when he would be able to leave the country.
Zhang Han merely stated that Li Yanhe's criminal facts are clear, and judicial organs have openly tried the case according to law and will execute the sentence according to law. She added that "individual media outlets on the island are repeatedly sensationalizing judicial cases and slandering the mainland's judicial system, with ulterior motives." She did not disclose Fucha's release date.
Fucha was detained by Shanghai's state security agency on March 21, 2023, and subsequently sentenced to three years in prison and one year's deprivation of political rights for "inciting secession."
