(Central News Agency reporter Gu Yong-li, Stockholm, 13th) President Lai Ching-te delivered a video speech at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Denmark on the 12th, stating that Taiwan's democracy can make great contributions to the world through regional peace and stability and by providing democratic supply chains in the semiconductor and AI industries. Michael Danielsen, chairman of Taiwan Corner, a Danish pro-Taiwan group, said that President Lai's speech let Europe know that Taiwan has the ability to contribute to world democracy and also demonstrated China's substantive threat to Taiwan.
President Lai was invited by the Alliance of Democracies (AoD) in Denmark to deliver a speech via video at the 9th Copenhagen Democracy Summit.
This year's Copenhagen Democracy Summit focused on the threats faced by Greenland, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Chairman Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated at the meeting that the significance of the Democracy Summit lies in defending these democracies threatened by authoritarianism, and Taiwan is one of them.
He stated that Taiwan is a vibrant democracy and plays a key role in the world's technology industry. Taiwan demonstrates that the power of democracy and freedom can create an innovative, prosperous, and vibrant society, which is why China targets Taiwan. Because of Taiwan's freedom, those who support democratic values must support Taiwan even more.
President Lai's speech mentioned that last month he had originally planned to lead a delegation to visit Eswatini but encountered China's obstruction of normal flight routes. This made it clearer to the global democratic community that authoritarian regimes are attempting to impose their rules on the world, even at the cost of breaking international conventions and using global flight safety and civil aviation order as leverage for political pressure.
He said that Taiwan is in a critical position in the first island chain, at the forefront of the democratic defense line, and Taiwan is willing to share its experience in dealing with authoritarian forces with the international community. He also stated that Taiwan's world-leading semiconductor and AI industries are the result of long-term mutual trust and cooperation between Taiwan and the United States, Japan, Europe, and many democratic partners. In the future, Taiwan will continue to leverage its technological advantages and work with democratic partners to build trustworthy and more resilient democratic supply chains, making greater contributions to global economic security and prosperity.
President Lai also reiterated in his speech that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country, and the people of Taiwan have the right to go out into the world and the ability to contribute to the world. Any attempts to isolate Taiwan will not change Taiwan's determination to participate in the international community, and Taiwan will continue to be a force for good in the international community, shining brightly in the world.
Michael Danielsen, chairman of Taiwan Corner, a Danish pro-Taiwan organization that has long followed Taiwan, told the Central News Agency after President Lai's speech that President Lai's speech was excellent, especially his mention that Taiwan can contribute to the world's economy and democratic supply chains.
Danielsen stated that it is important that Taiwan no longer considers itself a "small country" and that this should be said loudly and repeatedly. He said that Taiwan is one of the world's top 20 economies and can be considered a major country that can make many contributions to the world, and President Lai's speech conveyed this important message.
In addition, he believes that President Lai's speech also clearly informed the Danish attendees of China's threat to Taiwan through the example of his recent obstructed visit.
The Copenhagen Democracy Summit has long focused on Taiwan's democracy, inviting high-level Taiwanese speakers each year. This year is President Lai's second time being invited to speak at the summit. Former President Tsai Ing-wen was invited to attend and speak in person in 2025. (Editor: Chen Cheng-kung) 1150513
