Wang Yi: China and France Need to Strengthen Strategic Communication

(Central News Agency, Taipei, May 9th) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with French presidential diplomatic advisor Emmanuel Bonne in Beijing on May 8th, stating that China and France need to strengthen strategic communication and coordination to jointly address global challenges; Bonne, in turn, said that France is willing to play an active role in promoting dialogue and cooperation between Europe and China.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website yesterday disclosed the content of Wang Yi's meeting with Bonne.

Wang Yi stated that French President Emmanuel Macron visited China last year, and the strategic guidance of the two heads of state reflects the high level and specificity of bilateral relations. China is willing to work with France to achieve greater progress in their cooperation and bring more benefits to the people of both countries.

Wang Yi also said that the current world is full of chaos, and as permanent members of the UN Security Council and independent major powers, China and France bear important responsibilities for maintaining international peace, stability, and development. It is necessary for both sides to strengthen strategic communication, conduct strategic coordination, jointly address global challenges, and promote the healthy and stable development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and France, free from various interferences.

Wang Yi also reiterated that the foundation of China-France relations is solid political mutual trust, and the key is mutual respect for each other's core interests. "We hope that France will abide by the One China principle with practical actions, not engage in any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan authorities, and not send any wrong signals to the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces."

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Bonne stated, "France fully understands the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, adheres to the One China policy, and its policy on this issue will not change."

Bonne also pointed out that France looks forward to close cooperation with China to jointly find constructive solutions to global crises. "Under the current international situation, it is crucial for Europe and China to maintain dialogue and cooperation. The EU needs China and hopes to be a trustworthy partner with China. France is willing to play an active role in promoting dialogue and cooperation between Europe and China."

When Wang Yi spoke with Bonne by phone at Bonne's request in January this year, he said that the international situation has undergone major new changes, which can be described as chaotic. As independent major powers, China and France should strengthen communication and coordination to inject valuable stability into the world and better leverage the strategic value of China-France relations.

Subsequently, Wang Yi spoke with Bonne again by phone at Bonne's request in March to communicate on the Middle East situation. Wang Yi said that in the face of a critical situation, China and France, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, should strengthen strategic communication and coordination, firmly uphold the UN Charter and international law, and prevent the world from reverting to the law of the jungle.
