(Central News Agency reporter Yang Yao-ju, Taipei 7th) Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, a diplomatic ally, visited Taiwan today. In an exclusive interview with CNA, he revealed that during his transit through the United States on his way to Taiwan, he met with Honduran President Nasry Asfura. He strongly recommended that Asfura consider the partnership between Paraguay and Taiwan; Asfura also showed great interest in the cooperation experiences between Paraguay and Taiwan.
Peña arrived in Taiwan early this morning and posted on social media that he had met with Asfura while transiting through Los Angeles to attend the Milken Institute Global Conference.
Peña revealed that this was his second meeting with Asfura. During their first meeting, they discussed the excellent relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan. This time, he told Asfura that he would visit Taiwan to strengthen bilateral relations and reiterated Paraguay's determination to work hand in hand with Taiwan.
Peña mentioned that Asfura was very interested in Paraguay's experience, and he strongly recommended that Asfura look at the partnership between Paraguay and Taiwan, as well as their efforts in economic diversification and development.
When asked if he mentioned Honduras's desire to resume diplomatic ties with Taiwan, Peña smiled and said that this detail was not mentioned, but it is no secret that Paraguay openly supports Taiwan. Asfura clearly knows that Paraguay is not only an ally of Taiwan but also a strong advocate, just as he ensures that the issue of Taiwan's recognition receives attention at the United Nations.
Peña emphasized, "Asfura is clearly aware of this point."
Peña is leading a delegation to Taiwan for a state visit from May 7th to 10th, and he accepted an exclusive interview with CNA on his first day in Taiwan. (Editors: Lin Ke-lun, Wan Shu-chang) 1150507
