Formosa Club backs Taiwan, David W.F. Huang: Taiwan not alone

BRUSSELS, May 7 (CNA) — The Formosa Club, a cross-national, cross-party parliamentary group from Europe that supports Taiwan, issued a statement on May 6 in Brussels backing Taiwan. David W.F. Huang, Taiwan's representative to the EU and Belgium, expressed deep appreciation, stating that this shows Taiwan is not alone and enjoys significant international support.

On the day following the statement, the Formosa Club held a forum in Brussels, attended by pro-Taiwan parliamentarians from various European countries.

During an interview with CNA after the event, Huang noted that parliamentarians participating in the Formosa Club have consistently expressed deep concern about Taiwan's continuous exposure to military threats from China, as well as China's various infiltration tactics and attempts to isolate Taiwan internationally.

Huang recounted that China, through pressure, caused three African countries to withdraw flight permits they had already granted, forcing President Lai Ching-te's visit to Eswatini to be delayed. However, a few days later, Taiwan broke through China's blockade, and President Lai successfully completed his visit.

The statement emphasized supporting the international participation of Taiwan's democratically elected leaders and their freedom to visit Taiwan's allies, while opposing the instrumentalization of "overflight rights." This consensus was formed against such a backdrop.

Huang stressed that it must be assumed China will undoubtedly resort to its old tricks again. Therefore, in this Formosa Club statement, parliamentarians included content regarding overflight rights and free visits to allies. This also serves as a strong protest against China's actions of pressuring other countries and instrumentalizing airspace rights.

Huang expressed deep emotion regarding this pro-Taiwan statement and hoped to let the people of Taiwan know that Taiwan is not alone and has strong international support, so they should not underestimate themselves. (Editor: Chen Cherng-kung) 1150508
