(Central News Agency reporter Kuo Hsuan-wen, Hsinchu County, 6th) The Zhubei City Office in Hsinchu County announced today that Shuizun Park is facing issues such as pond eutrophication and rodent infestation. An engineering project employing ecological methods has been launched to address these problems. The pavilions and wooden boardwalks, which served as rodent hiding places, will be demolished, and prevention efforts will be strengthened. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Zhubei Mayor Cheng Chao-fang told the Central News Agency reporter today that after draining the pond in Shuizun Park, it was discovered that plastic mats were used as the base, preventing tree roots from taking root in the soil. This could lead to a risk of collapse during heavy rainfall.

He also stated that the pond's original design included two inlets and one outlet, but one of the inlets is no longer functional. Tracing the waterway revealed that the pipeline had long been damaged, causing water diverted from the Dongxing Canal to be lost directly.

Cheng Chao-fang pointed out that the existing inlets and outlets are all small in diameter. During dry seasons, the pond faces the dilemma of lacking active water replenishment, which has led to the pond being in a stagnant state for a long time, naturally exacerbating siltation and eutrophication.

He explained that there is also a rodent problem on site, found to be due to frequent feeding of birds by visitors, with residual feed and kitchen waste becoming a breeding ground for rats. The pavilions and wooden boardwalks, originally provided for recreation, have also become rat nests due to long-term disrepair.

Cheng Chao-fang said that the current engineering improvement project will adopt ecological methods to improve pond eutrophication and other issues. For the rodent problem, the severely decayed pavilions and wooden boardwalks will be demolished to eliminate rodent hiding places, and environmental cleaning and subsequent maintenance management will be strengthened to improve the overall environmental quality of the park.
