(Central News Agency reporter Wu Po-wei, Brussels, 6th exclusive report) The Formosa Club, composed of cross-national and cross-party European parliamentarians friendly to Taiwan, today issued a statement supporting Taiwan, emphasizing that Taiwan's security and resilience are crucial for global security and economic prosperity. It also called for strengthening cooperation between Europe and Taiwan in the semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and drone industries to enhance collective capabilities in responding to evolving threats.
The Formosa Club issued this joint statement, signed by parliamentarians from 14 European countries, in Brussels on the 6th. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Chih-chung posted the full text of the statement on his personal social media platform on the evening of the 6th.
The statement pointed out that the Formosa Club, as an important democratic platform, continues to promote cooperation to defend freedom, the rule of law, and a resilient, rules-based international order in the face of increasing authoritarian pressure and hybrid threats. It reiterated its commitment to deepening parliamentary cooperation between Taiwan and Europe.
The statement said that democratic systems face increasing pressure, and there is an urgent need to strengthen democratic resilience in technological, economic, and social fields to maintain common security. In this regard, Taiwan plays an indispensable and increasingly important strategic role in supporting Europe's efforts to build resilience, and is central to establishing a trustworthy "non-red supply chain," including in advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and the development of drones and unmanned systems.
Therefore, it called for strengthening cooperation between Europe and Taiwan in these areas to enhance collective capabilities to predict, resist, and effectively respond to evolving threats.
The statement also recognized Taiwan's outstanding contributions in the field of public health, emphasizing that Taiwan's advanced medical system and active international assistance to partners in need have proven to be reliable and valuable partners in responding to global health challenges. According to a resolution passed by the European Parliament on October 24, 2024, it emphasized that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not take a position on Taiwan.
The statement reiterated support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its conferences and mechanisms, as well as the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA), where Taiwan's expertise would significantly benefit the international community.
The statement also mentioned recognizing Taiwan's unique and indispensable role as a strategic hub in the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan's security and resilience are crucial for global security and economic prosperity. Therefore, it reiterated the importance of peace, security, and freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait.
The statement expressed support for the international participation of Taiwan's democratically elected leaders, who should enjoy the freedom to visit Taiwan's allies. Any attempt to deprive this right, such as instrumentalizing "overflight rights," will not be supported.
The statement concluded by re-emphasizing that as legislators, they are committed to fostering principled and pragmatic cooperative relationships, establishing lasting parliamentary partnerships, enhancing democratic resilience, responding to contemporary challenges, and promoting the democratic partnership between Europe and Taiwan. The Formosa Club will continue to strive to achieve these goals. (Edited by Chen Cheng-kung) 1150507
