(Central News Agency reporter Yeh Su-ping, Taipei, May 5) President Lai Ching-te today met with a cross-party parliamentary delegation from Israel. He stated that although Taiwan and Israel are geographically distant, they share universal values such as democracy and freedom, and both face complex regional situations. In the face of the continuous expansion of authoritarianism, only by continuously enhancing self-defense capabilities and strengthening social resilience can peace be ensured. The President looks forward to more bilateral cooperation to contribute more to global and regional efforts.

President Lai returned to Taiwan this morning after his visit to Eswatini and immediately met with the Israeli cross-party parliamentary delegation led by former Israeli Knesset Speaker and senior member Mickey Levy.

President Lai stated that although Taiwan and Israel are geographically distant, they share universal values such as democracy and freedom, and both face complex regional situations. In the face of the continuous expansion of authoritarianism, both deeply understand that only by continuously enhancing self-defense capabilities and strengthening social resilience can peace be ensured, protecting the daily lives of the people and democratic institutions.

President Lai said that Taiwan particularly values opportunities to learn from like-minded countries. Israel's rich experience accumulated over many years in civil defense mobilization, emergency response, and battlefield medical care, as well as the spirit of unity and resilience shown by its society, should all be learned from by Taiwan.

He hopes that through the 'Global Cooperation and Training Framework' (GCTF), Taiwan can work with allied countries such as Israel to continue strengthening exchanges and cooperation on issues such as digital development, cross-border crime, sustainable development, and medical resilience, jointly contributing more to the global democratic camp.

President Lai stated that last year, Taiwan and Israel completed the signing of two cooperation memorandums: intellectual property cooperation and patent examination highway. These not only help the patent layout of companies in both sides but also can combine the technological advantages of the two countries to promote their industrial development.

The President stated that Israel is an internationally renowned country of innovation, possessing AI R&D and software capabilities. Taiwan is also actively promoting the 'New Ten Major Construction Projects for AI,' gradually realizing the vision of an 'AI Island.' He believes that Taiwan and Israel can work together to address the challenges of the AI era, jointly enhance supply chain and economic resilience, and drive global prosperity and stability.

President Lai expects that through more frequent bilateral exchanges and more diverse cooperation, the partnership will continue to deepen, jointly safeguarding democratic values, and contributing more to global and regional efforts.

Levy stated in his address that this visit to Taiwan conveys a clear message: the firm and strong friendship between the two countries. Taiwan is a true friend of Israel. He believes that both sides can cooperate to deepen relations because both are democratic and free countries, capable of strengthening cooperation in areas such as economy, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology.

Levy stated that for Israel, “we need peace, but to have peace, we must first have security.” Israel will never lose any more battles and will always be on its own land and homeland. He hopes that the Taiwan-Israel relationship can continue to deepen, grow stronger, and become more robust. (Editor: Wan Shu-chang) 1150505
