Japan and Indonesia Defense Ministers Meet in Jakarta, Sign Defense Cooperation Agreement

The agreement covers cooperation between the two sides in areas such as defense industry, personnel training, and disaster prevention measures.

Reuters reported that before the signing ceremony, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, in a pre-recorded statement released by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, said: "Both sides agree to promote substantial cooperation in defense industry and personnel development, while taking into account each other's national interests."

Shinjiro Koizumi pointed out that this agreement is a "compass" and a "key milestone" guiding the defense cooperation between the two countries.

However, both defense ministers did not specify the exact areas of cooperation.

Last month, Japan lifted its long-standing ban on overseas weapons exports, hoping to strengthen its own defense industry capabilities.

Shinjiro Koizumi said that he and Sjafrie also held bilateral talks to discuss cooperation between the two countries in maritime security, joint military exercises, military equipment, and defense technology.

Shinjiro Koizumi also mentioned: "At a time when conflicts like those in Iran reflect the increasingly complex and tense international situation, deepening defense cooperation between Japan and Indonesia will not only make a significant contribution to the peace and stability of both countries, but also to the entire region."
