(Central News Agency reporter Chang Chien, Hong Kong, 4th) The Guangdong Provincial Nuclear Emergency Committee Office today notified the Hong Kong Security Bureau of an operational incident at the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. Foreign objects were previously found in the No. 3 steam generator and have now been removed.
A spokesperson for the Security Bureau stated that, according to the notification, "On April 30, Unit 1 of the nuclear power plant was in a planned shutdown for overhaul. Foreign objects were found during a visual inspection of the No. 3 steam generator. After the inspection work was completed on May 2, a total of two coiled debris-like foreign objects were found, measuring 1.5 cm by 1.5 cm and 3.5 cm by 1.3 cm respectively. All foreign objects have been removed, and the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant is currently conducting foreign object traceability and related analysis work."
The notification pointed out that, "During the handling process, Unit 1 remained in a safe state, with the three safety barriers intact, and no radioactive substances were released to the outside; this deviation had no impact on the safety of the unit, the health of employees, the surrounding public, and the environment. According to the International Nuclear Event Scale and nuclear safety regulations, this situation was defined as a Level 0 deviation on May 1."
Online information shows that there are four nuclear power plants built and operating in Guangdong, including Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant, Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plant, and Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, among which Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant is most familiar to Hong Kong citizens.
As Guangdong is very close to Hong Kong, the safety issues of nuclear power plants in the province are of great concern to Hong Kong people. (Editor: Lu Chia-jung) 1150504
