(Taipei, April 30, Central News Agency reporter Wang Shu-fen) According to the Taiwan-US Equivalent Trade Agreement (ART), US peanuts will be imported at zero tariff, causing concern among some peanut farmers. Chang Chien-hao, who cultivates Black King Kong peanuts in Yunlin, remains confident. He believes that while there may be short-term price fluctuations, Taiwanese peanuts are hard to replace.

Chang Chien-hao, in a phone interview with Central News Agency reporter, admitted that he has been continuously following the issue of zero tariffs on US peanuts but is not overly concerned. He stated that he grows peanuts himself and also processes them. Taking peanut brittle as an example, if imported peanuts are used, the aroma would definitely not compare to Taiwanese peanuts. He believes that if processors are accustomed to Taiwanese peanuts, they will not rashly switch to imported peanuts, as they would soon face consumer acceptance tests.

Chang Chien-hao said that indeed some processed products currently use imported peanuts, such as peanut powder used in red turtle cakes. After US peanuts become zero-tariff, most of the buyers will still be the businesses that already use imported peanuts.

However, Chang Chien-hao also said that the purchase price of peanuts by dealers might fluctuate in the short term, but he believes Taiwanese peanuts are difficult to replace, and the import volume of zero-tariff US peanuts will not increase too much. In the medium to long term, Taiwanese peanuts can still return to a good price level.

Chang Chien-hao believes that facing labor shortages, Taiwanese peanut cultivation must transform. He is a peanut farmer undergoing transformation, having invested NT$20 million in the past two years to build a peanut drying plant and promote contract farming. He said that the traditional method of drying peanuts on the road is too labor-intensive, and while equipment drying will initially increase costs, it is the necessary direction for the future.

Chang Chien-hao is one of Taiwan's first batch of 100 outstanding young farmers. To promote domestic Black King Kong peanuts, he formed the Tuku Grain Production and Marketing Class 23 in 2017 and serves as its head. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150430
