(Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-Ming, Chiayi County, 30th) Chuang Tsui-Ting, Section Chief of the Planning and Management Section of the Chiayi Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, was commended by the Agency before Labor Day for her initiative in establishing the "Mountain Mouse Radar Station" LINE account reporting platform in 2019, which significantly reduced illegal logging in Taiwan's mountains through the cooperative reports of hikers nationwide.
Chuang Tsui-Ting told the Central News Agency reporter today that in 2019, when she was working in the Forest Management Section of the Chiayi Branch, cracking down on illegal logging was a primary task. At that time, there was only a reporting hotline. By the time the police and management units received the information, the illegal loggers had already fled. Therefore, she thought of using the immediacy of LINE to establish the "Mountain Mouse Radar Station" group and invited a large number of hikers to join.
Chuang Tsui-Ting stated that the power of hikers indeed made it impossible for illegal loggers to hide. Photos and coordinates of the loggers could be sent immediately upon discovery. The Forestry Bureau and the police only needed to wait at the entrances and exits of relevant forests to catch the loggers.
She gave an example: once, illegal logging occurred in the Alishan area. Hikers immediately took clear photos of the loggers and uploaded them to the "Mountain Mouse Radar Station" group. The police caught the individuals based on the photos at the entrance from Shanlinxi to Alishan, even though the loggers did not carry the illegally felled timber at the time.
In addition, in November of the same year after the platform was established, the agency received a report from a hiker about an illegal logging case in the Tefuye mountainous area of Alishan Township, Chiayi County. The felled camphor wood measured 12.99 cubic meters and was valued at over NT$2 million. Through horizontal coordination with prosecutors and police, the suspects were traced and arrested within two days.
The Chiayi Branch of the Forestry Bureau stated that since the establishment of the "Mountain Mouse Radar Station" in 2019, 4191 people have joined the platform, and over a hundred cases have been reported. The reporting and response effectiveness during this period has been excellent, earning public trust and recognition. The Forestry Bureau's statistics show that the number of illegal logging cases significantly dropped from 290 in 2013 to 58 in 2024, successfully combating illegal logging.
Before the May 1st Labor Day, the Chiayi Branch of the Forestry Bureau stated that Chuang Tsui-Ting was commended as an outstanding employee by the Agency for her meritorious service in preventing illegal logging. In 2024, she also received an award from the Executive Yuan for "Meritorious Individuals in Combating Land Conservation and Environmental Crimes." (Edited by Li Shu-Hua) 1150430
