Thomas & Uber Cup Badminton: Taiwan Women's Team Overturned by Indonesia, Advances to Quarterfinals as Group Second

(Central News Agency reporter Li Chien-chung, Taipei 28th) The Taiwanese women's team, already confirmed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thomas & Uber Cup badminton tournament, today competed with Indonesia for first place in their group in the final preliminary match of the Uber Cup. Unfortunately, after leading 2-1, they were overturned, eventually losing 2-3, but still advanced to the quarterfinals as the second-place team in their group.

The Thomas & Uber Cup badminton team competition is comprised of the men's Thomas Cup and the women's Uber Cup, held simultaneously at the same venue but separately.

The Taiwanese women's national team was grouped with Indonesia, Canada, and Australia in the Uber Cup preliminaries. In today's final preliminary match, both Indonesia and Taiwan had a record of 2 wins and 0 losses, competing for first place in the group.

Today, in the first women's singles match, Chiu Pin-chien lost 17-21, 17-21 to Indonesia's top player, Putri Kusuma Wardani. However, in the second women's doubles match, Hsieh Pei-shan/Hung En-tzu, and in the third women's singles match, Lin Hsiang-ti, both defeated their opponents in straight sets, giving Taiwan a 2-1 lead.

Unexpectedly, Hsu Yin-hui/Lin Chih-yun lost the fourth match with scores of 21-11, 20-22, 16-21. In the decisive fifth women's singles match, Taiwan fielded Huang Yu-hsun, ranked 31st in the world, against Indonesia's Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, ranked 264th in the world.

In the first two games, both sides won one game each. In the crucial third game, Huang Yu-hsun fell behind 2-6 at the start. Although she managed to narrow the gap to 8-9 at one point in the middle of the game, her opponent then launched a 5-1 offensive, widening the lead.

Unfortunately, when Huang Yu-hsun was trailing 12-15, due to too many unforced errors, her opponent scored 6 consecutive points to end the match. The Taiwanese women's national team also lost 2-3, thus advancing to the quarterfinals as the second-place team in their group.

Head coach Liu Chia-cheng, in an interview with the Central News Agency, said it was indeed a bit regretful. He added that team competitions are all about momentum, and they couldn't get past the fourth women's doubles match when they had the lead.
