New Zealand Exposes Suspected North Korean Maritime Violations, Denies Interfering with Chinese Airspace

WELLINGTON, April 28 (AFP) — The Royal New Zealand Air Force said today it found multiple suspected illegal maritime transshipments while monitoring North Korea's evasion of international sanctions. Air Commodore Andy Scott stated that P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft discovered multiple suspected violations of sanctions during missions in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. In addition to "suspected illegal ship-to-ship transfers of cargo," New Zealand also reported 35 vessels of concern to the United Nations. Scott said, "Upholding international law is vital for regional security, and we are proud to play our part in this important task." North Korea is subject to multiple UN sanctions, including prohibitions on developing nuclear weapons and using ballistic missile technology, but Pyongyang has repeatedly and flagrantly violated the restrictions. The New Zealand military has participated in multinational operations since 2018, patrolling the Yellow Sea and East China Sea to enforce sanctions against North Korea. The New Zealand military stated that it had reported vessels suspected of transporting refined oil to North Korea, as well as coal, sand, gravel, and iron ore exports used by Pyongyang to fund its nuclear weapons program. However, China this month protested New Zealand's patrol operations, calling them "disruptive and irresponsible" surveillance conducted within Chinese airspace. China also accused a New Zealand aircraft of conducting "close-in reconnaissance and harassment" over the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. New Zealand, for its part, refuted Beijing's accusations.
